The following is an excerpt from Microsoft's website explaining Lync:

Lync Online connects people everywhere, on almost any device. Lync provides a consistent experience for presence, instant messaging, voice, video, and a great meeting experience. Lync enables instant messaging (IM) and voice calling with the hundreds of millions of people around the world who use Skype.

Lync features

  • Get real-time presence information—including photos, availability status, and location—and enhanced instant messaging (IM) to connect efficiently and effectively.
  • Make voice calls through your computer to other Lync or Skype users in your organization or in other organizations that use Lync or Skype.
  • Create, moderate, and join pre-planned and on-the-fly audio, video, and web meetings with people inside and outside your organization.
  • Enhance online presentations with screen-sharing and virtual whiteboards.
  • Let others participate in your Lync conference calls even if they are not Office 365 or Lync Online customers. (They don't even have to have Lync installed on their computer. It can be accessed for free on the web

This article discusses how to configure Lync. Separate articles will discuss the various functions of the application.

To configure Lync on your computer (you may run it on more than one machine simultaneously), click the Start button and type lync in the box that says Search programs and files:

We need to configure Lync so it is available, but not in the way. Click the gear icon on the right side of the window (not the down arrow next to it, the gear itself):

Lync will now minimize to the system tray when you click the minimize button OR click the "X."

Before closing the options, click Personal. Place a check next to "Automatically start Lync when I log on to Windows."

If there is a check next to "Show Lync in the foreground when it starts," remove it.

Once you finish a conversation with someone, Lync will create a new folder in your mail store so you may refer back to conversations as needed. A copy is also kept in Lync.

To see the Lync copy, click the speech bubble:

How to use Lync to set a custom location

You may use Lync to set a custom location. For example, you are out of town at a conference. It would be helpful for your colleagues to be able to see your status and know you are out of town. To set your location, click Set your location:

How to use Lync to set your status

Lync will automatically set your status to "In a meeting" if there is an event on your calendar. If you wish to manually set your status, you may select your status from the Drop down next to your name:
