Directory or Search Engine?

Whenever I've done a search on the Internet I've always said  I was using a "Search Engine".  But did you know that there are "Search Engines" and then there are "Subject Directories"?  There is a difference and knowing this difference can help you get the information you seek much quicker.  Below you will find characteristics of each and links to a few of the top rated "Directories" and "Search Engines".

Search Engines

  • built by computer programs
  • pages are ranked by mathematical formula
  • pages found by matching words in any Web site
  • generally retrieve a lot of information
  • Not evaluated

Google   www.google.com

AllTheWeb  www.alltheweb.com

Alta Vista www.altavista.com (also has a directory search)

Subject Directories

  • put together by humans
  • organized into subject categories
  • do not contain full-text of the web pages they link to
  • offer fewer results
  • often evaluated and commented on

About.com  www.about.com

Yahoo  dir.yahoo.com

Clearing Print Jobs

When was the last time your printer started printing out page after page of what looked like Greek?  This does happen occasionally and can usually be remedied by doing the  following:

  • double click on the print icon down on your taskbar.
  • delete all print jobs
  • remove the power cord from your printer for 10 seconds
  • reboot your computer

Nine times out of ten, following the steps given above will send you on your way back to happily printing.

I hope to change this feature once  per month.  If you have any tips or tricks that you would like to share email them to Karen Thompson.
