English II        Requirements and Expectations

Course Description

As a prerequisite for English III, this course further develops the following:

The reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text

bullet

The structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences

bullet

Expression of ideas clearly and effectively in a variety of oral contexts and apply active listening skills in the analysis and evaluation of spoken ideas

bullet

Analyze content and concepts accurately in media/technology

bullet      The literary study is organized according to genre:  short story, drama, the novel, poetry, and non-fiction, and the selections are multi-ethnic/cultural. 

The students will:

Behave respectfully to everyone at all times

bullet

Consistently come to class on time prepared for class discussions and activities

bullet

Assume responsibility for all assignments, deadlines, and any work missed when absent

bullet

Stay on task at all times

bullet

Follow school rules

bullet

Leave class a limited number of times and for emergencies only

bullet

Study, review, and read on their own time, not just before a test

bullet

Turn off all sounds on cell phones including vibrate 

The parents will:

Help students take responsibility for class assignments, deadlines, and studying

bullet

Expect the best effort from the students but be realistic in their expectations

bullet

Work with the teacher to encourage students to achieve academic success

bullet

Review with the students their progress.

bullet

Check the class website for information about assignments.

The teacher will:

Materials Needed

bullet

Three ring binder with dividers for Literature, Vocabulary, Grammar, and Writing

bullet

Loose leaf paper (no spiral allowed)

bullet

Pens (black ink preferred) and Pencils: (All essays should be typed: double spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, black ink.)

Grading Procedures

Homework:

bullet

Homework will be collected on loose-leaf paper. No spiral.

bullet

Late homework will receive half credit up to two days. Homework will be considered late if it is not completed at the beginning of class. Homework is assessed for correctness, not effort.

bullet

Major essays or projects will receive a ten point deduction per day up to five days.  Afterwards no grade higher than a 50 will be given.  

 

Greeneville High School Grading Scale:

93-100%:  A

85-92%:    B

75-84%:    C

70-74%:     D

0-69%:       F

Grading:

Tests/Timed Writings/Projects      35%                       

Major Essays                                 35%

Homework/Class work/Quizzes  30%  

9 weeks exam & final exam = 1/9 of 9 weeks grade                                         

Gateway Exam = 15% of final grade

Make up work:

Tests will not be made up during the class period.  It is up to the student to schedule a makeup test with the teacher.

Make up tests will be scheduled before or after school.

bullet

It is up to the student to find out what assignments have been missed.  Check the website or the “While You Were Out” notebook.

Students have five school days from the date of an excused absence to make up all missed assignments or tests; however, if a student misses only the day an assignment is due, that assignment must be turned in the day the student returns.

bullet

No credit will be given to a student who has missed a test or assignment due to an unexcused absence.

bullet

Major class projects and assignments will be given a due date.  These projects are due on this date, unless a student has an excused absence on due date.  The projects are due the day the student returns.

Extra credit is not available in the English Department.  The expectation is that students will     complete the assigned work promptly. I do give extra points for students who have gone above and beyond my expectations for any assignment.
