"I used to rule the..."
  • I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
    Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
    (Ohhh)

"It was the wicked and..."
  • It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

    Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
    Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
    Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
    (Ohhhhh Ohhh Ohhh)

Novelistic approach
6
Realistic approach
  • The song reminds me of football. Just like in the song he is talking about war and celebration. The football field is just like that. It’s a warzone when your playing the game but after you win its time to celebrate. Also when the song mentions the people cheering for the king, football players also get cheered for. The fans ring the bells just as in the song the people of Jerusalem did.
7
Thematic approach
  • Often successfulness of one does not necessarily mean that one is also happy because one can easily fall from his or her high position of authority or power. “Long live life" is a saying that best describes the song, hence the title.
  • “That was when I ruled the world” (19)
  • “Sweep the streets I used to own” (3)

8
Allusion approach
  • The song, “Viva la Vida”, can best be related to a movie called “Gladiator”.
  • The movie, “Gladiator”, is like the song because the movie is about a regular man who had got power, and lost his power to a greedy King’s son.
  • “Viva la Vida” is about a man who became King, and ended up losing his power to a group of revolutionaries.
  • The event which shows great similarity is that they both revolve around a war.  The song is referring to the French Revolution.  The movie is referring to one of the many battles for the Roman Empire.

English Teacher approach continued
  • The figurative language allows the reader to understand the song better.  It also helps the reader to interpret the meaning of feeling that the author had as it was written.
12
Significant Event approach
  • This song, “Viva la Vida” was written to tell the story of King Louis XVI during the French Revolution.
  • The CD cover is “La Liberte Guidant les Peuplues”, a painting by Delacroix that is depicting the French Revolution
  • The writers of the song wanted to try something different than they had created before.
  • Coldplay says the song’s theme is about "trying to remember what's important in your life, rather than being carried away by the trappings of other things.“ this song is about cavalries, missionaries and kings. "It's a story about a king who's lost his kingdom...There's this slightly anti-authoritarian viewpoint that's crept into some of the lyrics and it's some of the payoff between being surrounded by governments on one side, but also we're human beings with emotions and we're all going to die and the stupidity of what we have to put up with every day” (different band members).
