Miller warns of the dangers of society’s hysteria in The Crucible.   In history, “witch hunts” have occurred with Nazis and Jewish concentration camps, Americans and Japanese internment camps, Americans and communists (Red Scare), and, in some people’s opinion, they are happening now in a variety of situations.  Do you think society has had “witch hunts?”  Do you think we’re having “witch hunts” now?  Why or why not?

"A man doesn't become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall."   Aristotle    A tragic hero is a character who must be respected or have a noble birth, have a tragic flaw or harmartia , such as pride, fear, trust…, come about his downfall or reversal of fortune because of this flaw, and  see his tragic flaw too late.  Who is the tragic hero in The Crucible and why?  Give three reasons.

A crucible is defined as a severe test or trial.  Discuss the significance of the title, and choose three characters that undergo a severe test.  How does the test reveal each individual’s true character?

The Crucible is filled with characters that make us feel strongly.  We might feel pity, anger, fear, sorrow, addled, etc.  Pick three characters who make you feel some emotion.  Analyze what you feel and why you feel that way.  In other words, is it because of the character’s personality, actions taken or not taken, beliefs, values, etc.

FOR ALL OF THESE PROMPTS, a minimum of two quotes, parenthetically documented, must be used in each of your three body paragraphs.
