Program Goal

To develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of cosmetology and to complete necessary requirements that will enable students to pass the Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology Examination which will make them eligible to secure a license for the practice of cosmetology.

 

 

 

Course Objectives

  • to assist students in mastering cosmetology skills necessary to become a licensed technician
  • to encourage students to complete needed number of laboratory hours necessary to be eligible for the Tennessee State Board Examinations for cosmetologists
  • to provide necessary individual instruction to students in the cosmetology lab
  • to participate in community-based health care experiences
  • to assist students in developing attitudes, personality, and appearance that is pleasing to the cosmetology environment and to communicate with and relate to people
  • to assist students in developing salesmanship techniques and human relation skills necessary to be able to communicate with patrons, employers, and employees in a salon environment
  • to assist students in acquiring knowledge and understanding of good citizenship
  • to assist students in recognizing and appreciating good workmanship
 

 

Course Description and Outline

Cosmetology is taught in a cosmetology lab that is very similar to that of a professional salon. The curriculum consists of both theory and hands-on laboratory experience.

The course outline includes the following major topics:

  • sterilization and sanitation
  • shampoo and rinses
  • manicuring
  • histology of hair
  • finger waving
  • pin curling
  • theory of massage
  • scalp treatments
  • hair-cutting
  • styling
  • cells
  • bleaching and tinting
  • hair pressing
  • chemical hair relaxing
  • styling and care of wigs
  • salon management

Certification/Articulation/Post-Secondary Training

Since the Cosmetology Program produces a licensed practitioner, no further training is required to begin practice. However, some cosmetologists may choose to specialize in some specific area of cosmetology.
