Program Goal

The carpentry concentration of Industrial Technology is concerned with the design and construction of homes, factories, schools, stores, and municipal projects. Emphasis is placed on specifications, cost and estimates, as well as  methods of construction. Carpentry graduates are competent in construction methods, ,tools, materials, and safety.

 

 

Course Objectives

  • to develop sufficient skills for entry-level employment in a carpentry related business

  • to stimulate sufficient interest in carpentry to encourage post-secondary education
  • to develop and practice safe work habits
  • to develop an understanding of employment and educational opportunities in related fields
  • to understand and develop life skills not learned elsewhere

 

 

 

Course Outline

Beginning Program

Construction Core

This course introduces students to basic skills and knowledge applicable to all construction trades.  This will be taught through six modules:

  • basic safety
  • construction math
  • hand tools
  • power tools
  • blueprints
  • basic rigging

Carpentry

The carpentry core consists of five modules:

  • leadership, citizenship, and team work
  • safety
  • construction drawings
  • building materials
  • hand and power tools

 

Advanced Program

The advanced program explores in detail the following seven modules:

  • concrete applications
  • wall construction
  • engineered structures
  • windows and doors
  • stairs
  • wallboard
  • finish work
