Spring
Spring is a great unit to do when all the things are beginning to bloom! Usually this week of study is the week before Easter.
Pre-writing Center: include words with picture-Spring; flowers; rain; sun; wind--for the children to trace, draw, and write about.
Art: During this week we make lions using paper plates and use orange and yellow yarn to make their manes.
Sand and Water: During the weeks before and after Spring/Easter, we place Easter grass, plastic eggs, and baskets for the children to play with.
Library: Here are some books we use during this unit...this list is by no means complete.
A Tree Can Be...by Judy Naye
When Spring Comes by Robert Maass
All Together Now by Anita Jeram
The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown
I Can Read About Seasons by Robyn Supraner
Hopper Hunts for Spring by Marcus Pfister
The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Judy Dunn
In the Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming
Housekeeping: In housekeeping center we add spring cleaning supplies; broom, dust pan, feather duster, rags, clean, empty spray bottles, etc.
Math and Manipulatives: I am big on file folder games, during this unit the child discover the differences of Spring and Winter or Spring and Summer using file folder activities.
Science: In the science center we provide a branch from a tree that has buds on it; fresh flowers; seed pods (the helicopter ones are always a hit with the children); and even cotton plants. We have made a game using seeds in labeled baby food jars (with lids taped on) and the seed packet; the children match the words on the packages with the label on the jar. They are able to see the seeds and the plant it grows into. We use veggies that the children are most familiar with--carrots, lettuce, green beans, lima beans, and cauliflower.
